- 1/2 cup steel cut oats
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup chopped cherries (I used frozen)
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds
- 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. ground flax seed meal
In a small saucepan, boil water, cherries, flax meal, and salt. Add oats, almond extract and sliced almonds to boiling water. Return to boil for two minutes. Cover, turn off heat, leaving covered saucepan on the cooling electric burner. Let stand for 40 minutes.
The cherries color everything this weird purply-maroon color which, frankly, isn’t all that appetizing; however, the flavor is fabulous and such a nice change from standard hot cereal flavors!
If you want more crunch, add the almonds after the oats are cooked and ready to serve.
